In the bustling neighborhoods of Noida’s Sector-63, one humble library is setting a new standard for community learning—thanks to the vision and dedication of Ms. Geeta Sharma, a local government school teacher. Observing children idling on the streets after classes, Ms. Sharma saw possibility, not defeat. She proposed a new use for the neighborhood library: transform it into a free after-school resource hub where any child could find homework help, reading circles, creative workshops, and safety until parents return.
With persistence and collaboration with the city librarian, Mr. Anand, and support from Noida Lok Manch (an NGO managing the public library), Sharma launched her experiment two years ago. Initially greeted by just a handful of children, the space now regularly hosts over 40 young learners—school-goers and out-of-school kids alike. The “homework help for free” call has evolved, now attracting children from other sectors, following word of mouth and social campaigns.
What Makes the Sector-63 Library Special
- Free Academic Support: Students get guidance not only from Ms. Sharma but also from volunteer tutors—retirees, college youth, and community champions.
- Inclusive, Collaborative Learning: Older kids tutor younger ones, reading circles celebrate both Hindi and English stories, and donated tech supports basic digital skills.
- Holistic Activities: Art workshops, chess and Scrabble for critical thinking, science fair-style events, seasonal book-exchange drives, and even street-cleaning campaigns have become part of the routine.
- Safe Space for All: Especially important for girls and marginalized students, the library doubles as a safe haven, promoting equal access to learning and expression.
Grassroots Impact & Community Growth
- Parents report improved discipline, reading habits, and academic performance.
- Children gain skills beyond textbooks—leadership, teamwork, and social responsibility.
- Regular events like World Environment Day campaigns and holiday donation drives expand the library’s reach and foster civic pride.
Resource Challenges & Community Support
Despite tight resources (chairs, Wifi, reading materials), Ms. Sharma’s appeals for support on social media are answered by local families and professionals. Donations of books, technology, and even snacks show how urban communities can unite for the next generation.
Looking Forward
Ms. Sharma’s dreams don’t stop here: plans for a digital lab, science kits, and mobile book carts are underway. Her work exemplifies what the “Change Makers” of Noida can achieve by using city assets for the greater good. With every after-school session, the Sector-63 Library matures as a vibrant model for all urban communities.
