Inheritors of Earth at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in Saket, New Delhi, explores plant life as part of a shared world, rather than simply as scenery or something useful to people.

The exhibition brings together paintings, photographs, drawings, videos and installations. Curated by Premjish Achari, Senior Curator at KNMA, it opened to the public on September 9, 2026.

Looking at plants differently

According to KNMA’s press release, the exhibition examines growth and decay, rootedness and migration, memory and ecological change. It asks visitors to reconsider relationships with plants beyond their appearance or practical uses.

One of its starting points is Vaikom Muhammad Basheer’s Bhumiyude Avakashikal (1977), which imagines humans, plants and animals as equal custodians of the planet.

Achari describes artworks that engage with mangroves, forests, plantation crops and urban trees. The exhibition connects these living environments with histories of labour, caste, ecology and care.

Art, sound and a reading room

The exhibition also includes poetry and audio narration by Manuel Mata, a seating installation by Sweety Chakma and a soundscape designed by Ben Goldfarb.

A reading room features a selection of works from the Shared Ecologies archive. These contributions extend the exhibition beyond individual images to include sound, reading and installations.
