The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has scheduled the launch of its GSLV-F18 rocket carrying the NVS-03 navigation satellite for Friday, October 30, 2026, at 11:51 PM IST.

The launch is planned from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

NVS-03 is part of India’s second-generation NavIC navigation satellite series. The mission is intended to support the continuity of India’s satellite-based navigation services.

What Is NavIC and Why Does It Matter?

NavIC, short for Navigation with Indian Constellation, is India’s independent regional satellite navigation system.

Like GPS, NavIC provides positioning, navigation and timing information. The system is designed to serve India and areas extending approximately 1,500 kilometres beyond its boundaries.

Satellite navigation technology supports services used across India, including vehicle navigation, location-based applications, transport systems and emergency response. Availability and performance depend on compatible receivers and service integration.

However, the launch does not mean existing smartphones or navigation applications will immediately gain new capabilities. Any practical improvements depend on successful satellite deployment, operational readiness and device compatibility.

What Is Special About the NVS-03 Satellite?

According to ISRO, NVS-03 is part of the second-generation NavIC satellite series.

The newer generation supports an L1 navigation signal alongside the existing L5 and S-band signals, with the aim of improving compatibility with a wider range of navigation receivers.

The GSLV-F18 rocket is planned to place NVS-03 into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.
