  • Prof. Gobardhan Das from NITI Aayog delivered the inaugural address at a cancer research conference in Greater Noida, focusing on affordable treatment and genomic research.
  • For residents of Noida and Greater Noida, the event brought global discussions on cancer biology and research applications directly to local university campuses.
  • Readers should note these discussions were policy priorities rather than announcements of new treatment facilities or services in the area.

Greater Noida hosted an international discussion on cancer research and access to treatment as Prof. Gobardhan Das, Member, NITI Aayog, delivered the inaugural address at the 21st International Conference on Emerging Frontiers in Cancer Research.

The conference was held from October 29 to 31, 2026, at Gautam Buddha University and Shiv Nadar University in Greater Noida. Its theme was “Molecular Mechanisms to Personalized Treatments”.

According to NITI Aayog, Prof. Das highlighted the need to strengthen cancer research using Indian genomic datasets, biobanks and trials. He also emphasised faster translation of scientific discoveries into patient care and wider access to affordable cancer treatment in smaller cities and rural districts.

Why Indian Genomic Research Matters

One of the central points raised during the inaugural address was the need for cancer research to reflect India’s population.

Prof. Das emphasised the importance of Indian genomic datasets, biobanks and trials in developing research that is relevant to the country.

Genomic research examines genetic information, while biobanks preserve biological samples and associated information for scientific studies.

He also called for faster translation of research from laboratories into clinical applications, highlighting the need to connect scientific discoveries with patient care.

Affordable Cancer Care Beyond Major Cities

Another key issue raised by Prof. Das was the availability of affordable cancer treatment outside major metropolitan centres.

According to NITI Aayog, he stressed that access to cancer care must extend to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities and rural districts.

His remarks highlighted the importance of ensuring that advances in cancer research reach patients beyond established medical centres.

These were policy priorities discussed at the conference, rather than announcements of new treatment facilities or services in Greater Noida.

Cancer Research Conference Brings Institutions Together

The three-day conference was organised by Gautam Buddha University in association with Shiv Nadar Institute of Eminence, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in the United States, Rutgers Health New Jersey Medical School and the Cancer Research and Care Academy.

The scientific programme covered several areas of cancer research, including precision oncology, molecular biology, cancer treatment resistance, emerging therapies, and the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The first two days, October 29 and 30, were hosted at Gautam Buddha University, while the final day, October 31, took place at Shiv Nadar University.

Why This Matters for Greater Noida

For biotechnology, life sciences and medical research students in Noida and Greater Noida, the conference brought discussions on cancer biology, emerging treatments and research applications to local university campuses.

It also highlighted an important distinction between scientific advances and their availability to patients. Research findings must be translated into clinical practice before they can contribute to improved cancer care.

The priorities outlined by Prof. Das focused on strengthening Indian research capabilities and widening access to treatment across the country.
