The heat is about to break.

After days of temperatures touching 41 to 44 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and strong gusty winds for Noida and Greater Noida tonight. The alert runs through May 30, with a significant temperature drop expected by the weekend.

If you are stepping out tonight or planning travel over the next two days, here is what the forecast says.

Tonight: May 28

The most active weather window is tonight.

IMD has forecast thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by strong winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph and gusting to 70 kmph during the evening and night hours. Noida’s maximum temperature today has been around 41 degrees Celsius, with the current reading in the mid-30s as the cloud cover builds.

Rain spells are likely during the late evening. Residents should expect wet roads, reduced visibility and the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpasses during heavy spells.

What to do tonight:

  • Avoid stepping out during active thunderstorm spells, especially between 8 PM and midnight
  • Stay away from open areas, trees and elevated ground during lightning
  • Do not drive through waterlogged underpasses or roads
  • Secure loose items on balconies and rooftops before the winds pick up
  • Keep emergency numbers handy: Noida police helpline 112, NDRF 011-24363260

Tomorrow: May 29

Friday brings continued unsettled weather but also the first meaningful temperature relief.

IMD forecasts a generally cloudy sky with two spells of rain. The morning and forenoon spell will carry winds of 60 to 70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph. A second spell in the afternoon and evening will bring winds of 40 to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph.

The maximum temperature is expected to fall to around 37 degrees Celsius, a drop of approximately 4 degrees from today. This is significant relief for a city that has been under heat wave conditions for several days.

Commuters heading to offices on Friday should plan for rain delays, particularly in the morning.

May 30: Further Cooling

Saturday continues the cooler trend.

IMD forecasts a cloudy sky with rain, thunderstorm and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph. The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 34 degrees Celsius, the lowest reading Noida is likely to see this week.

By Sunday May 31, conditions are expected to ease to partly cloudy skies with occasional rain spells and a maximum around 36 degrees.

Why the Sudden Change

The weather shift is being driven by a western disturbance interacting with moisture-laden easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal. This combination typically triggers pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity across the Indo-Gangetic plain, of which Noida is a part.

This is not the monsoon arrival. The southwest monsoon is still several weeks away for the Delhi-NCR region. These are pre-monsoon thunderstorm spells, which can be intense but shorter in duration than monsoon rain.

A Note on Air Quality

Today’s AQI in Noida is in the Poor category, with PM 2.5 at 173. Rain and strong winds typically help bring AQI levels down significantly within 24 to 48 hours. By Friday evening, air quality is expected to improve noticeably.

Residents who have been experiencing respiratory discomfort during the heatwave period may find some relief as the air clears after the rain.
